Operation Snake Eater
Since relations between the East and West have been strained due to Volgin’s sadistic need to destroy things, Operation Snake Eater was created to give Snake and crew one last chance to right a few wrongs before they have to face the firing squad.
No dramatic entries here, just jet in, do the job, and jet out. Because they couldn’t risk dropping Snake close to the compound, he has to land well outside of it. His first trek will be to meet an informant named ADAM, but ADAM couldn’t make it and instead is replaced by the sultry EVA, not that Snake is complaining. Feeling dazed from the landing, Snake rests only to find out that once again the Ocelot unit has him surrounded. After taking care of the small fry, Snake moves out only to fight Ocelot yet again, this time in a gun duel. But they are interrupted by a swarm of bees and Snake is forced to jump into a crevasse.
There he does battle with The Pain, a freak who commands bees. After destroying him, he moves out to find Granin, another researcher. Granin is bombed upon Snake’s arrival, but informs him of the most important clue in the game, the Philosopher’s Legacy. It seems the world’s superpowers had pooled a lot of money together in order to stop Hitler; the remainder was to be split among the nations… but disappeared. Volgin’s father had laundered the money throughout a series of banks. The Philosophers’ Legacy is a record of those transactions and the only source of info on its whereabouts. Snake moves out to fight the Fear.
After the Fear explodes in a rain of arrows, Snake moves on to fight the End, who is an expert sniper. After a long battle with the End, Snake moves on to once again meet up with EVA. Just as sultry as ever, EVA tells Snake about Volgin’s compound of Groznyj Grad. Snake then moves on to fight the last of the Cobra unit, The Fury. With the Fury dead, Snake finally sneaks into Volgin’s main compound.
After acquiring a disguise, Snake is caught by Volgin who catches him be grabbing his crotch of all places. Volgin proceeds to beat the living daylights out of Snake. In the torture area, Snake loses his left eye protecting EVA who is doubling as Volgin’s prize. After escaping the compound, Ocelot chases Snake through the sewers only to watch his target fall over a waterfall, Fugitive-style.
Once again Snake meets up with EVA who brings him his equipment and the two share… a moment. Sneaking back into the compound, Snake plans to plant bombs and blow the Shagohod, and the compound to smithereens. Only, Volgin once again catches him and once again the two fight, only this time Snake wins when Ocelot will no longer take orders from Volgin. After escaping the fiery explosion, Snake and EVA plan to go and confront the Boss… its Snakes final duty.
Except, Volgin, nor the Shagohod are terminated yet. Crashing through the fiery hanger, a chase scene begins and ends at a bridge where Snake fires a bullet at some planted bombs. It’s over… no it’s not! The final battle with Volgin begins as the two disable the Shagohod. But Volgin isn’t going down easy and uses his body’s electric charge to power the beast. After everything Snake and EVA throw at him, Volgin is finally destroyed by a bolt of lighting. Don’t mess with nature eh?
Another chase scene ensues when troops on floating platforms chase them through the woods. Everything goes well until EVA and Snake take their eyes off the road and run into a giant log that sends them crashing over a hill. Snake’s badly injured and EVA is worse having been impaled onto a branch. After some quick triage and brief look into her medical history… hmm, not real huh, didn’t think so, Snake carries EVA to a lake where she has prepared a plane to get away in. But before they can leave, Snake has one last battle, the battle with the Boss. After a brief fight, Snake… has to end the Boss’s life in the familiar tragic way Solid Snake had to end Sniper Wolf’s in Metal Gear Solid.
After narrowly escaping, Snake and EVA share yet another moment together, only to have a rude awakening the next day, at least for Snake. EVA was a Chinese spy all along who was sent to find the Philosophers’ Legacy. She did her job, she obtained the Legacy, but in return she told Snake the truth behind the entire mission. The Boss in fact had not defected to the Soviet Union, rather she was sent in to obtain the Philosopher’s Legacy, but Volgin fired a nuclear missile on his own countrymen, something no one predicted. Because of this, the Boss gave her life to prove the U.S.’s innocence.
With the Boss dead, Snake is awarded the title of “Big Boss”, the boss to surpass The Boss. He then heads to a grave, the Boss’s grave. He does the famous salute with a single tear falling down his cheek.
Further down, past the credits, Ocelot reveals that he was indeed ADAM and that EVA had a fake Legacy. Instead, the half that was promised to the U.S. was in the U.S.’s hands thanks to Snake. It is also revealed that he is a triple-agent and is working for the C.I.A.
