Metal Gear Solid Retrospective: Part 3

Portable Ops

Released only for the PSP, Portable Ops fills the void of story left between Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid.

In a nutshell, Big Boss and Major Zero are falsely accused of starting a revolt and causing the FOX Unit to go rogue. In reality, it was Lieutenant Cunningham who is searching for the Philosopher’s Legacy and a man named Gene who has taken over command of the Red Army. While in prison, Big Boss meets a Green Beret named Roy Campbell and learns he is in Columbia. The basic idea is that Cunningham wanted to prolong the Cold War be forcing Gene to launch a nuke at Russia using an experimental Metal Gear.

Gene knows this thanks to Ocelot and instead plans to launch a nuke at the U.S. to rid of the Philosophers and carry out his dream of an “Army’s Heaven”. Big Boss interferes and destroys the Metal Gear killing Gene as well. Before he dies, Gene hands over everything to Big Boss, funds, troops, everything, telling him that one day he will them. Once in the U.S. Big Boss forms FOXHOUND and begins planning for his dream of “Outer Heaven”. Meanwhile, Ocelot destroys the Philosophers and begins his own plot to, with another person and Big Boss, become the Patriots! Bum, Bum, BAHHHHHH!!!

The gameplay of the Portable Ops was basically the same as Snake Eater with the addition of the “Comrade System”. This system allowed players to recruit other soldiers in order to build up their ranks for the huge task ahead. It would be the first game where a solo mission wasn’t emphasized. However, when a soldier was killed in action, they would be permanently dead unless they were a main character type. The game also featured an online mode where players could trade or capture soldiers, but again, if they died online, they died in game. The game was re-released as Portable Ops Plus which featured new characters and missions.

And that about does it kids, with a little less than week to go, we have effectively ended our Metal Gear Solid Retrospective. Time to go play the previous games, or at the very least watch the videos on YouTube. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed all the work we put into it because it was a pleasure to write it.
