Sept. 11 Version of Space Invaders Causes Uproar

Home : News : News Story

A digital artist has cooked up a very controversial version of Space Invaders showing aliens blowing holes in the Twin Towers.

A Space Invaders mod at Leipzig suddenly became the talk of the convention, as it depicts that game's aliens blowing holes in the World Trade Center. Um yeah, I scarcely know where to go from there.

Digital artist Douglas Edric Stanley did the extremely controversial piece as part of an exhibit celebrating Space Invaders' 30th Anniversary. The New York Daily News got wind of the story and began calling families who lost members in the Sept. 11 tragedy. Needless to say, they were not pleased.

The most recent debacle this situation brings to mind is the Super Columbine Massacre RPG, which was initially a finalist at the Slamdance Gamemakers Competition until it was pulled for its content. In that game, players took on the roles of Columbine High School shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.
